Hot, Dry. Swirling Winds of Hell Must Mean It’s My Birthday!

I was SO happy to arrive in Carlsbad that I almost dropped to my knees to kiss the ground but then I remembered all the germs and disgusting things that people spit out, and my better judgment prevailed.

We got Angel Boy all settled in; now I’m working on creating meals and recipes that are appropriate for post-surgery, and that includes a lot of things we NEVER have in the house: white bread, white potatoes, white rice.

Because of that major abdominal surgery, he’s on a low fiber, low residue diet for a couple more weeks, and then we can gradually add cooked veggies and fruits, with the goal to be back on his regular diet in about six weeks.

I’ll set aside a whole post of recipes that I’ve adapted to meet his specific needs. It’s tough for me ‘cos I’m all about whole grains and tons of greens and wheat grass and smoothies, and I think all Angel Boy wants is one of my famous two-pound breakfast burritos. He’s lost about ten pounds that he didn’t need to lose (why can’t that be me??)

Before all this happened…the phone call at 3 a.m., flying east and living at the hospital for ten days, I was planning to write a really funny post about my birthday (which is today) — something about the face of 60 — yes, I mean SIXTY YEARS OLD — and how I still feel like I’m about thirteen, and then take a bunch of selfies to commemorate my special day — but I’m too busy helping my son recuperate (a full-time job).

,,,AND I just drove to the airport at 5 a.m. to put my tugboat man on a flight ‘cos he’s going away for a month — ON MY F-ING BIRTHDAY!!!!

Live is not fair, you guys!

Geez, nothing is working out for me today. I can’t even go shopping and drown my sorrows in some good old fashioned retail therapy.

And why is that, you ask?

Because SoCal is under some witchy-type spell and the boiling hot bowels of hell opened up; we’ve got record-breaking 100 degree temps AT THE BEACH in May when it’s normally cool and cloudy, and raging fires have started which turns the air all smoky and unbreathable, thanks to almost hurricane-force winds blowing from the east — a true Santa Ana that we normally only get in the fall.

To make matters worse, there are armies of ants invading every pore of our house — Β even the ants are trying to escape the heat — and I’ve gone through an entire can of Raid in my attempts to dissuade them from setting up residence at Casa de Enchanted Seashells Β — which means the house smells like insecticide — can you hear my screams of frustration?

Well, it’s back to cleaning and laundry and making special food every two hours for my Angel Boy. Hopefully, it’ll cool off a bit later on and we can go for a walk on the beach.

Happy Birthday to me!!!!!!

P.S. You must know that I’m really happy to be caring for Angel Boy and spending my birthday with him is an added bonus — considering that we might have lost him, even the thought of another bowl of Cream of Wheat can’t dampen my joy!

  1. Happy Birthday!!

Yeah… 100 at the beach. Gross. We tried to go to the beach yesterday for some relief and it was too hot and too windy and too disgusting to stay… in early May… what’s this world coming to?! πŸ˜‰

Glad you’ve got your AB at home. I know you’ll come up with all kinds of delicious meals for him. Sorry your tugboat cap had to leave this morning. Boo for that. But, I’m sure he’ll make up for it later.

And just think of all the shopping trips you’ll go on once the wind and heat die down. πŸ˜‰

  2. Happy Birthday!!! I am a couple of years shy of the big 60. You look great. Glad that your son is progressing well. Sorry your tugboat man had to leave on your birthday. Hope you have a great day β™₯

  3. Great photo of you — you don’t look a day over 50 (and maybe even younger!)! Remember when taking care of someone else, we have to take care of yourselves, so maybe a little retail therapy could be in order at some point. If the weather there is anything like it is in Kansas, wait a minute and it will be totally different.

  4. Princess Rosebud! How did I not know that today was your birthday?! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the most gorgeous 60-year-old I know! I know you’re thrilled Angel Boy is there with you, although you can’t indulge in your retail therapy, you will be soon enough. And that will just stretch your birthday out the rest of the month, right? You deserve to be celebrated all year long! XOXO

  7. Happy birthday! Glad you are not near the fire. My friend who lives in Carlsbad was surrounded and had to shelter in place with her three year old yesterday. Scary stuff. And you’ve had enough of that lately.

  8. You are ridiculously gorgeous! I love to share this Dar Williams quote with lovely ladies of every age: “This is your year, and it always starts here. . .” Check out the rest on YouTube if you don’t already know the amazing song, “You’re Aging Well.”

      • lol well my mom would never give me up, so maybe you can ask her, take me out on loan or something. πŸ˜‰ And I had to comment on that, I couldn’t hold back the truth.

      • Well makeup I think is just an embellishment to the beauty that already exists, right? Don’t worry, just telling it how I see it, not being creepy lol

      • I didn’t think you were being creepy at all! I noticed that in Cali women seem to age differently cos when I was back east for my son’s hospital stay, women my age just seemed older looking, maybe the cold winters? I’ve been asked if I’m my son’s SISTER three times in the last 3 weeks, so maybe everyone just needs glasses ha ha. I think it’s cos he’s so much taller than I am and I dress like a 13 year old. Even at the doc’s office yesterday, the person taking my history was asking me what I do to look younger and I said besides botox (true) I’ve been a veg since I was 16, and I think that’s really the key to being healthy. Again, let me repeat, NOT CREEPY!!! πŸ™‚

      • I agree. I think a huge part of it is healthy eating, especially a vegetarian diet. And the colder Winters here keep people inside more, plus they put on the Winter weight, so many people only exercise during the seasons when they have to show some flesh. I think with the weather in California, people are out more and are more body conscious in general. Also, I think it’s internal. You seem to be vivacious and positive, and that shows, making a person seem more youthful in appearance. And, I’m glad you don’t think I’m creepy πŸ˜‰

      • I’m mostly happy as well. I don’t know if it’s possible to be perfectly happy. I have no complaints, I’m very blessed. I have a great life in terms of family and friends, that’s the most important thing I think. And you got that right, if someone loves you, they either love or accept everything about you, and things like an obsession with Hello Kitty should be adorable lol. And thanks πŸ™‚

  9. Hi! Belated happy birthday! Found your page when I was searching for some info on Rose des Vents Hermes scarf and yours came up via Google. I loved your story and couldn’t help but follow you on Bloglovin’ πŸ™‚ I’m a Hermes scarf collector, and though I didn’t get the chance to buy the colour I wanted for that print, I managed to get a Rose des Vents enamel bangle instead in the colourway I love. Best wishes to you! Thanks for the ‘follow’ and I look forward to your posts. Have a lovely week πŸ™‚
