I’m trying to stand as tall as I can and at a vertically challenged sixty inches, that’s all I have to offer, because I need to give hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons a big huge, gigantic, massive
APOLOGY.
Why?
I misjudged him.
When I was sent his book, The Happy Vegan, to read and review, I thought it was going to be another superficial and chichi vanity publication written by a “famous person” in order to jump on the trendy new “vegan” bandwagon.
I admit that I started to read it with a closed mind.
I’ve been a vegan since 1970 and confess that I’m kind of a vegan snob, but I’m happy to say that I was wrong!
Yes, you heard me correctly; I was WRONG. (This doesn’t often happen haha)
This is a thoughtful, mindful, compassionate, and informative read about Russell Simmons’ journey and his guide to living a long, healthy, and successful life.
His writing style is down-to-earth, relatable, and I truly feel like he cares very much about getting his/our message out about the health benefits of a vegan life.
Not only is he a big name in hip-hop and a fashion entrepreneur, he’s a devout yogi, and for nearly seventeen years, Russell Simmons has been a vegan.
In The Happy Vegan, Simmons clears up misconceptions people might have about veganism and lays out reasons adopting a vegan lifestyle is in everyone’s best interest.
If Mr. Simmons can hear me…”I’m sorry. I was wrong to have misjudged you. I wish I could have met you when you were recently in SoCal. The Happy Vegan is an awesome book!”

I do like you an awful lot, my snobby, Previous Princess.
And I’m still testing the waters. I know that much of it has to do with my dairy allergy, and actually I’m (mostly) doing FINE without dairy, but I know that eggs and honey are still a thing, (on occasion) not to mention all the exhausting PRODUCTS that stuff might be in…ergh. It’s not an easy choice to take on this lifestyle.

We are all evolving and you are amazing to be making such tremendous changes in your life! It’s not easy, I KNOW! I bought cheese when my son/DIL were here and yes, I ate some, too, even though I KNOW all about dairy. We had a lot of discussion about eggs, DIL thought they weren’t treated so poorly and son was able to inform and educate-however, he still ate some, although they were organic and cage free, but I make him what he wants, luckily he doesn’t eat meat and neither does DIL anymore, so there’s another BRIT who gave up most animal products. I know it’s not easy for you guys who were raised with meat at every meal, am I right? Hub likes honey but I buy him agave instead, and he’s fine with that. It’s HARD! But striving to do no harm is what it’s all about, right?

I don’t think we had meat at every meal, but probably most. THAT SAID, my dear, apart from literally ONE accidental mouthful or two in OK, when I didn’t know what I’d ordered in a Greek place, I have been vegetarian for 11 months!
So there’s that.
I could switch to agave, or just not have sugar, tbh.
I rarely have eggs. What I DO miss a lot is GELATO, but I can’t have that because of the dairy, so there’s that.
Striving to do no harm is good. I also try to buy fair-trade for that reason, when the option’s there.

(is that for baking? I wonder if I should learn some vegan baking. I made amazing bready-cookie-things the other day, with ginger and mixed spice and grated apple in them – they were DELISH!

That sounds yummy! I like to zest an orange for oatmeal cookies, it seems to really bring out all the flavors and hub can tell when I don’t use it.
