I attended the very first Earth Day celebration in 1970 at Balboa Park in San Diego with a crowd of about 70,000 people. It was on a Wednesday, the weather was beautiful, about 68 degrees, and I must have skipped school that day.
I can’t remember who I went with or how I got there but I do recall walking from booth to booth looking for free stuff and having an unpleasant encounter with a San Diego cop, probably about being truant.
There is a vague recollection that I swore at him and he got all puffed up and intimidating, threatening to call my dad until I told him to go ahead, my dad was a lawyer…and then he walked away. Miss you Daddy!
I love the concept of EarthDay, of being good stewards and caring for Mother Earth, of passing on the torch to the next gen, but I probably won’t attend any large gatherings for a while–still being prudent about Covid and all that.
My local contribution to EarthDay is this neighborhood egret who just picked up something to eat; I think it’s a crab but I can’t tell for sure:

Happy Earth Day!
What a wonderful couple of shots of that beautiful bird. Your post reminded me to post a little something in honor of this day. I think it was 1993 or 4 (don’t know for sure) when I was working for Mission Trails, we had a booth in Balboa Park for Earth Day. Since part of my job was organizing volunteers it was a little fraught making sure people showed up. It was a lot of fun.

Wow! Our paths might definitely crossed at some point. Literally! Yes, it’s very hard to get and keep volunteers; I’ve run a couple of volunteer-driven nonprofs.

It’s likely. I think sometimes of all the people I might have encountered over the years without our even knowing it and then “met” online, here. It’s cool.

Dear Princess Rosebud,
Hello! I concur with Martha Kennedy. Once again, I have returned to your blog to look around and comment. Thank you for thinking about the Earth and for featuring my avian colleagues so commendably.
Indeed, Earth Day is so special and important that every day is Earth Day because we are so dependent on Mother Earth and owe her everything. Thank you for sharing and reminding us of this special day with the contents of your post.
I have also taken the opportunity to improve and update my expansive multimedia post about Earth Day at https://soundeagle.wordpress.com/2013/04/25/soundeagle-in-earth-day/
The said post is best viewed on a large screen of a desktop or laptop computer, since it could be too powerful and feature-rich for iPad, iPhone, tablet or other portable devices to handle properly or adequately. Please enjoy my Earth Day offering!
May you and Martha find the rest of 2021 very much to your liking and highly conducive to your writing, reading, thinking and blogging whatever topics that take your intellectual fancy!

Happy Earth Day! We have a few areas of our yard that have become severely overgrown the past few years as I haven’t been out there taking care of all the little details of our yard (like trimming the edges and cutting back overgrown bushes). As such, nature has moved in and I’ve been watching robins taking flight breaks- short layovers – on my deck before they take nest-building materials and beaks full of wiggly worms into a severely overgrown rhododendron bush. I’ve also been fortunate to see a tiny baby bunny a few times. The thing about trimming back the rhodie is it really needs to be done in late Feb. or early March before nesting and hatching, and before its May blooms bring the bees. Maybe next year.

Yes. And a few things grow a bit too well. LOL. Ever seen a barn or small house completely covered in blackberry canes?

No, I haven’t but my little Theo would never be able to get dragged away if he ever saw it!
