Sunday Blues

Happy Father’s Day

Happy Baby Daddy Day

Happy Deadbeat Dad Day

There are only a few blues in my garden — I wish I could successfully grow hydrangeas, but I think the soil would need a major overhaul.

I found these blues on my morning tour (to see if any more sick squirrels came to visit.)

Lily of the Nile, also known as Agapanthus…
against a backdrop of neon-pink Sweetpea Bush.

An artichoke that didn’t get picked in time to eat.

Lots of unpicked artichokes.

The only other blue is the flower from Ajuga, a ground cover.

  1. Unpicked artichokes? How does that happen?! I’m a wee bit jealous of your garden – the one time I’ve tried to grow artichokes I got two… both were about the size of a golf ball… :-/

    • Artichokes grow great in SoCal and they are perennial so they come back every year. I have HORRIBLE soil but hubs and I amended with free mushroom mulch and everything looks great. I only wish I had truckloads of that stuff, but no hubs, no mushrooms, sigh. Try again, I know they’ll grow for you! You must have just had a bad one…and the reason I didn’t pick and eat them is how depressing is it to cook a dozen artichokes and eat them all alone?? Very depressing, and a lot of work; maybe I could have preserved the hearts in oil or something but I just let them go.

      • I will try again… most of the problem is that I don’t actually have a backyard – our little postage stamp behind our condo is completely tiled over – I built a garden box for some random things (basil, peppers, cucumbers all do great in there), and we’ve got pots for tomatoes, strawberries, bougainvillaea, jasmine, etc… but, I’m guessing the artichokes need some deep soil to really do anything…

      • I would suggest planting it in a corner where you can kind of forget about it, plant other stuff around it, and let it grow. I’ve had mine about 3 years and every year there seems to be more and more artichokes. The first harvest of the season is the biggest and the subsequent ones are smaller but very flavorful. It doesn’t need to be big to be tasty…hmmm, ARTICHOKES!
