Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, another musical, magical visionary — gone too soon.
As much as we (I mean ME) believe that Leon Russell was a musical genius, he once said the same of Brian Wilson. He certainly would know as he was his keyboardist on many Beach Boys songs. Leon also praised Wilson’s courage to take risks and find new avenues as an artist. He compared Wilson to Beethoven and other composers, highlighting Wilson’s exceptional musical talent.
From Leon about Brian: “Brian, on the other hand, was a musical genius. I’ve played with him on records where there’d be 20 musicians in the room sitting around in a huge circle. He’d start at one end and sing the first musician their part, and then go to the second one and sing their part, all the way around the circle, and by the time he got around to the first one they had forgotten their part and he’d do it all again. That’s the way he taught those parts. Amazing.”https://bestclassicbands.com/leon-russell-interview-11-13-16/#google_vignette
Here are some of my favorite Beach Boys songs with contributions by Leon Russell:
Russell Bridges (Leon) on organ
Here is the rare version of “Endless Sleep”, Brian Wilson produced it at Gold Star Studios on February 18, 1964, using his usual Wrecking Crew members for the backing tracks. Included on piano was Leon Russell, who played on at least twenty Beach Boys songs and as many other songs that Brian produced for others, like The Honeys, Paul Peterson, Sharon Marie, Gary Usher and Glen Campbell.
California Girls studio, with Leon (of course)
This is a relatively long and rambling full session of Help Me Rhonda with the Beach Boys (Leon on piano) and their dad, Murray Wilson. Apparently he wasn’t a great dad and the reason Brian was deaf in one ear is because Murray hit him on the side of the head with a piece of wood when he was a boy. It’s even more remarkable that Brian could create such amazing music without stereo hearing.
This Strawberry Moon isn’t just any ordinary full moon – it’s going to be the lowest moon in the sky in 18.6 years and won’t hang this low again until 2043! It’s called a major lunar standstill, and should be visible just after moonrise.
The name comes from Native American tribes marking strawberry harvest season. I just learned this, too: June was a prime month for marriage and honey harvesting, and the June full moon was sometimes called the “Mead Moon” or “Honeymoon”, and that’s where the term originally emanated from.
June 11, 2025 at 7:44 GMT is peak illumination, but in many areas, best viewing might have been last night. I didn’t get any photos at all because the sky didn’t cooperate; too much marine layer and the moon couldn’t break through. I’ll try again tonight.
It’s a time for emotional healing and gratitude, encouraging connection with cosmic energies, releasing negativity, and manifesting desires. This full moon also marks a time for reflection and self-discovery. It occurs in Sagittarius, a sign known for its adventurous spirit, optimism, and pursuit of truth and freedom.
Don’t miss this rare celestial spectacle and don’t forget to charge your crystals!
I’m so proud of the San Diego community that stood strong to protect and defend the ICE kidnapping that happened on May 30 at a local restaurant, Buona Forchetta.
A video of the ICE raid showed heavily armed and masked agents (modern day Gestapo) dressed in full tactical gear surrounding the restaurant. A large crowd of community members pushed back at the ICE agents, surrounding their vehicles and yelling. The ICE agents deployed flash bang smoke grenades which broke up the crowd.
A local politician questioned why ICE agents were carrying machine guns and “aggressively shoving people against the walls,” handcuffing all the employees. He said the warrant for the raid, which was signed by a federal judge, instructed ICE agents to arrest everyone and detain all the employees.
“I don’t know how a federal judge signs off on that,” he said. “What about the rights of those citizens?” He said the warrant didn’t indicate reference to any of the workers having committed violent crimes.
Another politician said that the TWENTY armed agents who burst into the restaurant traumatized the staff and the owner.
Can you believe this is actually happening? And THIS, too…
The orange POS has planned a military parade in Washington, D.C. for his birthday on June 14. This display of might is intended to intimidate opponents and solidify his image as a strongman on our dime—we won’t stand by while that happens.
Instead of allowing this military farce to overwhelm the day, we will make action everywhere else the story of America that day: people coming together in communities across the country to reject strongman politics and corruption.
It’s significant that the new Pope also chose this day to appear in Chicago as hopefully millions of people gather and celebrate the election of its native son — and first North American pontiff — Pope Leo XIV.
Have you seen the news that the orange POS sent the National Guard to Los Angeles EVEN THOUGH our Governor did NOT request their presence?
Did you hear that the orange POS has made it ILLEGAL to wear masks in public UNLESS you’re a member of his ICE gestapo?
Do you understand what is going on? This is not a drill; democracy is in trouble. According to the nonprofit, Third Act, our role is to bring the power and wisdom of elders to this movement, to ensure ourvoices are heard loud and clear to protect our democracy and our rights.
I think I’ll join my friends and neighbors locally on June 14. Rise up! RESIST!
I don’t think these are really connected, but they happened on the same night.
The proof we rarely experience thunderstorms is the fact that there was a flurry of social media posts asking the question, “What was that noise?” “Did anybody else hear it?” “It sounded like a boom, am I the only one who heard it?” “Could it be thunder?”
And yes, it was, because I also heard a strange rumbling in the sky and texted my neighbors to ask if they heard it too. They said they were bewildered for a moment and then agreed that it was, indeed, thunder preceded by lightning, and then it started to rain — not a lot, but any skywater is appreciated.
That event certainly generated a lot of excitement in our little beachy town, that’s for sure.
I went to sleep, happy in the knowledge that my veggies and flowers were having a lovely little drink.
I woke up this morning and remembered a WEIRD dream. I always have vivid, detailed dreams, but this one is strange, even for me.
There was a female polar bear wandering around the front of my house, sniffing at plants and the driveway (weirdly specific), making her way toward the side gate. Following right behind her was a nursing cub that didn’t belong to her and she was sort of ignoring it. How did I know it wasn’t her baby? I have no idea, however, I told the mama bear to nurse the little one because it was hungry, and she did. (I’m bossy like that.)
That’s it. That’s the dream.
How random! How bizarre! I live in Southern California, not in Alaska nor anywhere else in the Arctic. A little research revealed that it’s not all that extraordinary to dream about a nursing polar bear. I guess I’m not as unique as I sometimes think I am!
Additionally, I hadn’t been reading or watching anything about polar bears, so this really and truly came out of nowhere but from the deep recesses of my subconscious.
Polar bears are revered in Inuit culture, representing intelligence, resilience, and the ability to survive in the Arctic. They can also be seen as a symbol of one’s inner strength and resourcefulness.
Dreaming about a polar bear nursing its cub can symbolize nurturing, protection, and the ability to overcome challenges, according to dream interpretation resources. In this context, the polar bear represents strength and resilience, while the cub signifies new beginnings and the importance of protecting vulnerable aspects of yourself or your life.
Nurturing and Protection: The mother bear’s act of nursing her cub in a dream often symbolizes your own nurturing and protective instincts. It can also reflect a desire to shield vulnerable aspects of yourself or your life from harm.
Strength and Resilience: Polar bears are powerful animals known for their ability to survive in harsh conditions. In a dream, they can represent your inner strength and the ability to overcome challenges and setbacks.
New Beginnings: The cub represents new life, growth, and the cycle of change. This dream could signal that you are entering a new phase in your life or that you need to embrace change and renewal.
Overprotectiveness: Dreaming about a polar bear nursing its cub can also highlight overprotective tendencies.
Here’s a little sprinkle of alchemy from Mother Earth.
I grew these flowers: Forget-Me-Not, Zinnia, Calendula…with seeds collected from last season’s blooms. It’s a satisfying project to participate in the circle of life, almost like I gave birth to them, which in a way, I did.
It’s not just me: A query about saving one’s seeds reveals this: Harvesting garden seeds offers a deep connection to the natural world, to become more self-sufficient, and to witness the unique adaptations plants make over time to their specific environment. It also provides a sense of continuity and independence from commercial seed companies.
Yes! I do so love FREE things!
I try to save as many seeds as I can in the veggie garden, too. Cilantro and tomatoes perform well, as do certain types of lettuce. Cucumbers and members of the squash family won’t produce true to type if they’re hybrids, but it’s fun to experiment.
June is full of color around here. Soon enough, it’ll be too dry and everything will turn drab and brown, but the joy continues because I’ll salvage the seeds for next spring. It’s the circle of life all over again!
I’m beyond ecstatic to report this awesome news that for the first time evera California Scrub Jay momma is building her nest here at Casa de Enchanted Seashells.
I’ve been feeding a Scrub Jay family for a long time and they’ve become so trusting that they eat out of my hand, but I’ve never before had one take up residence. The birdhouse is in a fruit-bearing mulberry tree and it’s going crazy this year. Sometimes I harvest all the fruit and make jam and cobblers; haven’t decided if I’ll do it again this season.
I can’t wait to hear and see the babies! Scrub Jays are known for their high intelligence, particularly their abilities in memory, problem-solving, and social cognition. They excel at hiding and remembering food caches, learn new tasks by applying general rules, and even appear to understand the perspective of other jays when deciding where to hide their food.
If that wasn’t awesome enough, check out this (uncommon) Common Yellowthroat OR American Goldfinch–I can’t identify it for sure. I was able to snap a few pictures as they snacked on spent lavender blooms.
Written by Bill Janovitz, this nearly 600 page New York Times bestselling biography of Leon Russell, Leon Russell: The Master of Space and Time’s Journey Through Rock & Roll History was a gift from the original Angel Boy.
I don’t think he (or the Angel Kids) quite understand my passionate interest (read obsession) with the one and only Claude Russell Bridges (Leon Russell), but he’s supportive in his own way, although he wouldn’t play “A Song For You” on our piano because he said it had been too long since he tickled the ivories and it might have looked simple to play, but it was a very complex piece of music and he didn’t feel he could do it justice. Or at least that’s the excuse he gave me.
So…this BOOK. It’s comprehensive, it’s respectful, and it delves into areas of Leon’s life that even I didn’t know. Yes, there’s some sex, drugs, and rock and roll, but the overarching theme of Leon’s life and music is LOVE.
The life path that took a child born with cerebral palsy during the Second World War, who overcame his physical challenges to become a classically trained pianist — and was catapulted to the top of the music scene–is inspirational. He was and always will be the Master of Space and Time — a visionary.
One of my favorite quotes from the book is from his friend and fellow musician, Ann Bell:
“One night everybody had gone to bed, and it was about four o’clock in the morning. All of a sudden, I woke up; I could hear him playing. It was a classical piece; he’s in the living room, where he had a piano, and he’s playing this piece that’s forty minutes long, from memory. There was no sheet music. I sat down on the bench, and I didn’t say a word. I just thought, ‘They didn’t understand the depth of his well.’ And when he was done, I was crying. He goes, ‘Girl, what’s wrong witchoo?'”
From the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: The definitive New York Times bestselling biography of legendary musician, composer, and performer Leon Russell, who profoudly influenced George Harrison, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, and the world of music as a whole.
Leon Russell is an icon, but somehow is still an underappreciated artist. He is spoken of in tones reserved not just for the most talented musicians, but also for the most complex and fascinating. His career is like a roadmap of music history, often intersecting with rock royalty like Bob Dylan, the Stones, and the Beatles. He started in the Fifties as a teenager touring with Jerry Lee Lewis, going on to play piano on records by such giants as Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, and Phil Spector, and on hundreds of classic songs with major recording artists. Leon was Elton John’s idol, and Elton inducted him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. Leon also gets credit for altering Willie Nelson’s career, giving us the long-haired, pot-friendly Willie we all know and love today.
In his prime, Leon filled stadiums on solo tours, and was an organizer/performer on both Joe Cocker’s revolutionary Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh. Leon also founded Shelter Records in 1969 with producer Denny Cordell, discovering and releasing the debut albums of Tom Petty, the Gap Band, Phoebe Snow, and J.J. Cale. Leon always assembled wildly diverse bands and performances, fostering creative and free atmospheres for musicians to live and work together. He brazenly challenged musical and social barriers. However, Russell also struggled with his demons, including substance abuse, severe depression, and a crippling stage fright that wreaked havoc on his psyche over the long haul and at times seemed to will himself into obscurity. Now, acclaimed author and founding member of Buffalo Tom, Bill Janovitz shines the spotlight on one of the most important music makers of the twentieth century.
I give this book all the stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and tophats 🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩🎩
In my opinion, if you don’t know who Leon Russell was, you should, and reading Janovitz’s biography is a good way to learn about him and to be amazed at his musical genius. You’ll understand why he’s referred to as the Master of Space and Time.
Leon Russell and the GAP band on The Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack:
Americans began to recognize Memorial Day in 1868, and the country established it as a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day and I remember we’d always buy red paper poppies to wear. This day honors the sacrifice and loss of those who served and died in the military, while Veterans Day honors all who have served in the U.S. military.
World of Love Hearts
While everyone is honoring the fallen heroes on this Memorial Day, how about the Vietnam veterans who have FALLEN through the cracks?
Did you know there are thousands (maybe more) of Vietnam veterans who were injured during active duty — it’s called a “service-connected injury” — but have no idea they’re even eligible for disability benefits?
Did you know that for those same veterans who have learned they’re eligible, that the entire process to obtain their rightful benefits is such a messed up, convoluted, horribly humiliating process that many of them give up or die before they’re compensated? These are veterans who are in their late seventies or eighties and shouldn’t have to spend their final years fighting for what they deserve.
If you check out some of the veteran disability websites or Reddit, you’ll learn that the overwhelming number of disability applicants are denied and try again and again to establish their legitimate claims — some have waited more than SEVEN YEARS to be approved by a nebulous “board“.
This “board” that makes these decisions are cloaked in mystery. No one at the VA (Veteran’s Administration) will disclose who they are. There is zero transparency.
Some say “Have you contacted your congressperson?” and that’s another rabbit hole of dead-ends. Even though someone I know is represented by one that claims to DO EVERYTHING to help Vietnam veterans, when you ask for specific help, they claim not to be able to do a thing and offer a list of worthless phone numbers for assistance. That’s just another way for government to not do their job–even though that’s the platform they campaigned on.
It’s incredibly disheartening.
As we honor fallen veterans, don’t forget the ones who are still here, suffering; often homeless, and definitely underserved. They’ve fallen through the cracks.
